Inaugural Social Enterprise Workshop – Connect, Equip & Empower

Social Enterprise Workshop January 2017 4 RichardLast Thursday (26th January 2017) we ran our very first Social Enterprise workshop aimed at connecting, equipping and empowering churches and Christian organisations with the basic knowledge and resources to engage in social change through social enterprise.

Senior Management of the host organisation, the Jericho Foundation, have over 20 years’ experience of running social enterprise businesses across Birmingham. Jericho has a Christian mission at its heart to help break down the barriers of unemployment in the city. Today, Jericho employs approximately 72 core staff with a further 17 apprentices and survivors of human trafficking undertaking supported work placements across 8 social enterprises. Jericho has a turnover of approx £3.2m a year of which 86% comes from social enterprise trading.

Chief Exec Richard Beard started the day by sharing the Jericho story and his vision, passion and faith that are the foundation of Jericho. Throughout the day members of the senior management team shared their tips and advice, and delegates also got the opportunity to explore and develop their own Social Enterprise business ideas.

Speakers included Helen Worrell (ReUse and Recycle Senior Social Enterprise Manager), Nigel Lawrence (Catering, Cleaning and Print Social Enterprise Manager) Patrick Masih (Client Support Manager) and Roger Bauckham (Director of Nexgen Marketing, a partner organisation).

Delegates received an insight into the world of social enterprise and throughout the workshop key elements were discussed to enable delegates to create a workable business plan for their social enterprise. Delegates came away inspired and with the practical steps to start developing their own enterprises in the local communities they serve.
