JERICHO Workwise

What is it?

JERICHO Workwise is an employability focused project working with local schools to provide year 10/11 pupils, who at risk of educational and future social exclusion, with real work experience, formal and informal work-based learning and business-specific training modules in one of our social enterprises.

It is designed to smooth the transition between school and work, raise aspirations, build self-esteem and improve educational achievement to prevent what can be the life-long damaging consequences of educational exclusion.

How does it work?

We offer 8 to 16 weekly ‘learn at work’ days in our social enterprises where our mentors help pupils navigate the workplace. We do our best to meet the interests and future career aspirations of the pupils and match these to our business opportunities. Workwise can link learning and work in a way that ‘classroom’ learning cannot, offering a different way to success.

Impact

Feedback from Teachers at Workwise participating schools:

  • “B’s participation and attitude to learning has significantly improved and they are engaging to achieve their objectives.”

  • “The placement has demonstrated to them that when they apply themselves, they can achieve and do well.”

  • “T is focused on getting to good grades and is determined to do GCSE’s next year to improve their chances of getting on the course they want.”

Feedback from at Workwise participating pupils:

  • “I improved my attitude because I wanted to avoid negatives and for the day to go faster so that I could get back to JERICHO. I knew I had to be better, or I wouldn’t be able to go to JERICHO.”

  • “I used to walk out of lessons and not bother doing the work. I now put effort into all lessons.”

  • “I feel more confident”
